Maternity Orientation
This program is sponsored by the medical center's Auxiliary. Parents-to-be will be presented with a slide presentation of the labor, delivery, and postpartum area at Long Beach Community Medical Center. Members of our staff will provide detailed information on hospital policy and procedures and answer any questions you may have. Family members are welcome to attend. Orientation programs are held on the second Wednesday of each month.

Early Bird Prenatal Course
Designed for women in the first trimester of pregnancy, this two-hour course emphasizes proper nutrition, exercise, and the methods most successful for obtaining relief from common discomfort. Also discussed are fetal development, proper body mechanics, and the emotional and physical changes that occur during pregnancy. Please call (562) 988-7431.
Prepared Childbirth Course
This six-week course prepares you and your support person for labor and delivery. You should register during your third-to-fourth month of pregnancy. Topics include: signs and stages of labor, natural breathing and relaxation techniques, the role of the supporting partner, birthing and the anesthesia options, cesarean birth, recovery from childbirth, and the postpartum period.

Cesarean Birth Class
This one-session class, designed for probable cesarean birth candidates, discusses preoperative and postoperative preparations, anesthesia options, the surgical procedure, recovery, and emotional adjustments. This class is included in the prepared childbirth series.

Refresher Course
This four-hour course is for couples who have attended prepared childbirth classes within the past four years. The class offers a review of pertinent information and updates on the latest advances and options in maternity care.

Breast Feeding Class
This three-hour class provides detailed information to help you make informed decisions about breast feeding your baby. Topics include: advantages of breast feeding, anatomy and physiology of the breast, the father's role in breast feeding, "how to's", breast feeding and the working mom, including the collection and storage of breast milk.

Infant Care Class
This three-hour class prepares new and expectant parents to care for their newborn. Topics include: characteristics of the newborn, bathing, diapering and cord care, infant car seat safety, signs and symptoms of illness, circumcisions, basic nutrition, and child proofing your home.

Infant/Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
This four-hour course, taught in accordance to American Heart Association standards, educates the family on basic CPR for infants and children. Certification is optional.

Sibling Orientation Topics covered in this one and one-half hour class include learning how to adjust to a new baby and basic baby care. A tour of the nursery is included. Participants receive a special T-shirt, coloring book, and certificate.

Safesitter Course
This 13-hour course is a medically-oriented instructional series that teaches boys and girls aged 11-13 how to handle emergency situations when caring for small children. Topics include basic lifesaving techniques, safety precautions to prevent accidents, how and when to summon help, and basic childcare.
