Touching Tomorrow
Sooner or later, cancer touches every man, woman and child--either by striking them directly or by threatening someone they love. If you've experienced cancer in your own family, you may wish to help others facing the same ordeal. The goal of the Long Beach Community Cancer Center is to create legacies to life, hope, and a healthier tomorrow.
Touching the Community
The Long Beach Community Cancer Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for cancer patients. Located across the street from Long Beach Community Medical Center, the new facility is designed and equipped to meet the growing need in the region for direct access to high quality cancer services. The warm, personal setting reduces patient stress and enables patients to be treated quickly, safely and with minimal disruption to their daily life.
Long Beach Community Medical Center has been a trusted provider of cancer care since it installed the area's first linear accelerator in 1973. Now, nearly a quarter of a century later, Community again takes the lead with advanced technology and personalized care.
Touching the Future...With Breakthrough Technology
The Center's radiation therapy system--including a new linear accelerator and computerized treatment planning and simulation system--provides the most powerful, precise, and safest radiation treatment available today. These treatment advances strategically deliver the optimum radiation dose to destroy a tumor anywhere in a patient's body without harming healthy tissue.
Enhanced by three-dimensional imaging to pinpoint the exact location, shape, and size of the patient's tumor, the radiation team uses computerized treatment planning to custom design the most effective treatment approach. The treatment is then simulated to check and verify treatment parameters before radiation therapy begins.
This highly precise treatment reduces side effects and increases the likelihood of a cure. For patients with a terminal disease, radiation therapy can often help ease symptoms and improve their quality of life.
Community's new technology holds particular promise for patients with complex or inoperable brain tumors. The Long Beach Community Cancer Center is one of only a few regional centers offering stereotactic radiosurgery to destroy brain lesions without surgery, utilizing intersecting beams of radiation. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and may be successful with just one treatment.

Touching the Future...With Research
The Long Beach Community Cancer Center is committed to putting research to work, improving treatment options and enhancing a patient's quality of life. The Llewellyn Bixby IV Oncology Laboratory evaluates the effectiveness of specific chemotherapy agents against individual tumors to help determine the best course of treatment. Ongoing clinical trials at Long Beach Community give patients early access to promising new treatments, including research into breast cancer prevention and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Program.
