Neurological Behavior Assessment Center
Anyone with significant memory loss, plus confusion, impaired judgment, speech problems, or behavioral programs severe enough to interfere with daily functioning deserves a comprehensive evaluation to determine the cause of worsening behavioral symptoms that lead to unsafe self-care practices. Authorities have identified as many as 60 disorders that can mimic dementia and cause memory loss. Therefore, differentiating between a treatable, reversible disease and another dementia producing disorder, such as Alzheimer's, is extremely important.Geriatric Outpatient Service
Long Beach Community Medical Center provides a multi-disciplinary geriatric outpatient service for individuals with symptoms of memory loss or related disorders. This service is designed to promote a better understanding of these diseases and provide resources for families, the patient, and their private physicians. We utilize a systemic approach to diagnosis, including but not limited to neurological examination, a medical history, and neuro-psychological assessment. Our goal is to determine the individual's ability to perform the normal activities of daily living and to assist families in planning for their future.
Evaluation and Testing
Appointments are set up with a neurologist, who rules out any metabolic disease and orders appropriate testing at the medical center. This appointment is followed by evaluations with Neuro-Assessment personnel and a Ph.D. who performs an in-depth psychological evaluation and testing. These appointments are followed by a conference that involves the patient, family, and all disciplines that participated in the evaluation. At this conference, we discuss the findings from the examinations and tests, make recommendations for follow-up care and referrals to other medical center resources, community resources, and support groups.
